What is the point of doing a crossword/quiz then asking other people for the answers ?
I thought the whole point of completing crosswords/quizzes was just that - you complete it, alone, as a personal test of your own knowledge. I feel the same about cheating with dictionaries and thesauruses.
I would understand if the Q&A section was used mostly by people setting questions for us to puzzle over, but when I come here and see that little side bar absolutely crammed with unanswered newspaper crossword or quiz clues, my heart does a mini-sink.
IMO it dilutes all the 'proper' questions or fun and shinanigans in CB.

Tell the people in quizzes and puzzles that, AP.

Oooh no! ...I'd get lynched !
..... but put a tin hat on first. ;o)
Answerprancer - what is AnswerBank's Q&P category for?
I mostly answer other people's questions where I can, but there are times when I am absolutely stumped on an answer on one I'm doing - so, like many others, I ask my learned friends on here. I can then see the answer and where I went wrong, We are all at varying levels of Q&P skills, I like to help where I can.
Why didn't you post this on the Q& P topics AP. Sometimes when you get stuck on a crossword clue and it becomes annoying, it is nice to be able to look on this site to find like-minded people to swap answers and sometimes whinge about a particular crossword. Are you saying you manage to do all your crosswords without seeking the answers you need?
all very well but why post your crossword questions everywhere but in 'quizzes & puzzles.

Like I said - I would like to see it as a place where quizzes and puzzles are set here, that would be far more inventive and sociable IMO.
i was stuck in our local papers crossword....the clue was postmans sack...for the life of me i couldnt get it...
Question Author
I deliberately didn't post it there because it was just an aimless whinge really - just throwing it out there - if I'm out-numbered by disagreement then so be it :-)
Question Author
..plus it was a question *about* the catagory (ie. not a "Q" or a "P"), I didn't hink it actually fitted there.
Postman's sack. How many letters? Hundreds!
actually mike11111////it was thousands....lol
If one last one was really bugging me I'd ask on here too, and some people dont do it for the fun, but for any where you can win money
// thought the whole point of completing crosswords/quizzes was just that - you complete it, alone, as a personal test of your own knowledge. //

Eventually, yes - but people have to learn and gain experience - so they ask others.
If I am absolutely and completely stuck on an answer to a crossword I have no compunction about asking for help, or using a dictionary or another reference: that's how you learn
Question Author
Yes, but isn't that a bit like doing your child's homework for them ?
There is a big difference between "helping" and "doing".

I can see this turning into an interesting philosophical debate about the nature of memory and learning but now I'm going to have to do a "hit n run" - I have a job to get to in about 15 min.
Thanks for the answers so far.
A child if they couldnt do it would hopefully ask a teacher and learn not just give up.
