Palm tree which smells awful...?

Took out a palm tree type shrub today for a friend. Most of the plant was dead, on taking off dead fronds there was some new growth at the bottom. The trunk was incredibly fibrous and as the sap came out it STANK!!!

I actually felt really sick by the end of the morning, I cannot describe the smell really, although it wasn't a pooey smell more sweet chemical(ish). But whatever it was really made me feel sick, anyone any ideas what it could be?
