Thanks all. I had thought of "ego" but didn't think it was a very good clue! Andrew

It is really Andrew, the Ego Theory was central to much of Freud's personality theories.

I think there's a little more depth to the clue than first appears. Central to Freud is "e" and work is "go" in the sense of functioning.
