A fit of the screaming thingies - if that goes in 6dn then the Siberian lake goes in 16ac but then 8dn doesn't fit with any of the answers in its cluster. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. There is a mistake in the preamble. I think the order of the quarters shoiuld read NW, NE, SW, SE. Then it all turns out fine.
While wandering unguided by the rubric I posted in Q&P, rather than in Crosswords!

turnerjmw, I quite agree with "your" opnion.
As turnerjmw says the order of the quarters is wrong so your screaming 'thingies'
definitely goes in 1d.

I did wonder about that but being a relative newcomer to this I assumed that I was wrong and never the compiler. Nervous breakdown averted, thanks to all.
Mostly coming together but worried about 19d which seems to be two words and not very satisfactory. Has anyone else got that problem?
How frustrating, pleased I looked at this site as try as I might I could not get this to work - lets try again...
Jogler, it sounds as if you have the correct entry -- but I agree that it's not very pretty.
Threw this on the floor in disgust last night because of the waste of time resulting from the preamble. Salvaged it this morning and finished it off - familiar theme, I think it came up in a Listener quite recently. 19d was the last clue I got.
Just started on this and already confused as my Siberian lake does not fit with 9d.
z-g, make sure you read all this thread as there is a typo in the preamble
The letters spelling out the thematic elements are nearly contained in the four parts of the grid - shame, would have been a nice twist if this had worked out
As I am poor at reading the rubric (along with flat pack instructions) I managed to fit the grid without realising the compiler's gaffe. A two edged sword really as I then tried to make sense of the correct letters in the misprints. Ho hum, live and learn.
Luckily I don't know my West from East and so started off rightly (wrongly) if u see what I mean .... so all worked out first time .... (though I confess I did try to use the correct letters before I reread the pre-ramble and went for the misprints ....) Quite fun, no need for BRB (I presume 31A with an "A" third rather than an "I" is okay...). Like others, 19D looks odd .... off for a Singapore Sling tomorrow at the Raffles ....
Hi trux

The A in 31a is fine. The definition works with both an i & the a.

The last time I was in Raffles they had lines of pre-poured Singapore Slings on the bar counter awaiting the tourists- a bit off -putting to me.
I hope that's changed for your visit.
I've got the screaming whatsits at 1D, so I assume I've got my quarters in the right place. According to my dictionary 19D is two words, so I don't know why the setter didn't say so (as with the clue in the 4d group)
Trouble is, I've assembled the misprints in the clues and I know where the final misprint is. There is then an obvious candidate for the ODQ reference - but I can't for the life of me see how this helps with filling in the final four squares. And if there are any subtle hints in this thread to date, I can't spot them either . . . can somebody please help?
cinnabar if you have the quotation (7 words), you start in the NW empty block and run it through the other 3 blocks.
The resulting shape is very similar to last weeks.
trux, I have fond memories of Raffles - got so engrossed in a game of snooker that I missed my flight home
Now I really have got the screaming whatsits - I really should have spotted that for myself, as it was much easier than last week's.
Kayakamina, thank you as always
Good evening all. Pottering along as usual, and coped quite nicely with the crossword and insertion of words (simply ignored the NW, NE stuff etc, as it seemed barmy to start on the right). Got the misprint phrase (though still don't know which is the misprint in the 3d cluster) and assume I have the further misprint sorted but still stuck on the quotation despite K's hint.
Hello Christiana,
I think that you will find that your misprint in the 3d cluster is uppermost in your mouth.
In terms of the quotation, I'd say K has described it well, except I'd be thinking 6 words that link the 4 barred off squares.
Is the end in sight for the fruit cropping and preserving yet!
