2d Late - delay, say, is a heavy burden (4,6) E-A-/W-I-H- Now I'm thinking that the second word is "weight", but I can't see the first word at all - is it "exam"? If so, why?

The first "e" in 2d is of course completely incorrect - I can't even spell a four letter word at 1a :-(
