We got back tonight after driving to Chicago to see my dad. A little bittersweet this year as my mom passed away earlier this month. Now a week with everyone at home until the oldest heads off to Peru for a week, then she's back to a (hopefully snow-cleared) Boston! DocHH, she is also planning on the Dominican Republic for Spring Break this year.
Best wishes for a Happy New Year to N&Cers everywhere!

Sadly, no shares in motorway services - in fact they probably would rather we didn't stop to use their free facilities and then sit in the carpark with our flask and sandwiches! Our stay on the M1 was not exactly of our choosing... and, in fact, we ended up staying in a very nice Best Western close to The Stables (just outside Milton Keynes) which is a small music venue that we can strongly recommend. Favourite motorway? Probably the M6 through Cumbria - along with many people.
Dominican Republic sounds like an excellent choice, especially as we look out on the fog. As for the front end of the plane.. that sounds wonderful too - but unless one of us learns to fly, sounds is all it will be!
A very happy New Year to everyone; it has been a pleasure, and a privilege, to join in the thread over 2010 and we are looking forward to similar conversations in the year to come. /raises glass :)
