Is it the French Department "LOT", if your "I" is incorrect? Sorry, I do not have the crossword or any idea of what the wordplay might be.

If _it then the answer may be dit (from department = d, the other = it).
Dit means close up therfore s(t)op.

What did you get for 2dn? As you know I thought it might be fall.

Thanks I'd got department as D but couldn't work out 'it',
it'll = it will is what I've got, which gives you the 'T' you need

Just seen this mornings postings. It is important for line drawing later on to have i--l. Certainly (itll) will fit the bill nicely. There is a nice finish to this crossword(particularly figuratively) if one perseveres.
