How can I work as a Trade Plater moving HGVs and PSVs?

Many years ago I used to work for a company, which shall remain nameless, as a Trade Plater. This job involves collecting and delivering cars and vans all over the U.K. The only downside of it is that it is very low paid, and the hours are long, and you also have to hitch-hike between jobs. As some of you know I have both an HGV and PSV licence, and would be willing to use both of these as a trade plater moving these type of vehicles. Can any of you tell me of any reputable companies in the Midlands area who do this, and if so what is their website?

By the way do not say Uniloads as have already worked for them, and it did not work out.

I can't point you in the direction of any relevant websites but I suggest that you look in your local Yellow Pages, under 'Car & Vehicle Delivery Services'. Alternatively, start your search here:

Many of the firms listed there are clearly not relevant to your needs but it might be worth phoning some of the more likely-looking ones. (For example, Car Collection Solihull Ltd mention moving commercial vehicles and also using trade plates).

When I was desperate for work as a trade plater I started my search by making loads of phone calls to firms listed in Yellow Pages. I didn't directly find anyone who would take me on, but one of the guys I spoke to was kind enough to contact his colleague who then put me in touch with UFD. I ended up spending 2½ years working for less than the national minimum wage but, even so, it helped me to avoid bankruptcy and to keep my home.

With your HGV and PSV licences (and with a base in the Midlands, rather than 'out in the sticks' in East Anglia where I am) your earning potential should be much higher, so a similar way of seeking employment might help you.

Well, let me just say, Chris, that I have never known you to to be wrong, so does that answer your question about the nameless company. They are the lowest payers in the business, and will never go back to them again. Any other ABers done this job, and if so what companies are the best payers?

One of my exes used to do this for a Vauxhall dealership..............I always remember he went all the way from York to Belfast only for the customer to tell him he'd brought the wrong car!
