Wow. Absolutely brilliant. I tried to rotate the rings mentally, but got out the scissors after a few minutes. Then half my letters were upside down, so I printed out a new grid and re-filled it. An incredible feat of construction, I thought. Difficult but lots of fun.

growf - the necessary words are in the 2003 and 2008 editions of Chambers. I don't go any further back than that!

A late start this week after a weekend away. Greatly encouraged by the universal enthusiam for this puzzle. I now have a full grid, I think all correct, and will start on the Blue Peter stuff when the in-house techie has printed me a grid big enough to handle.

Just followed borealis's recommendation and identified the thematic elements hidden through the clues - brilliant !

danielmason - the wordplay on 30 radial makes the answer fairly obvious, although I don't think the result is in Chambers in that form. Googling the word does confirm it.

Do you think CORVETTES might be reassessed as V CO-SETTER - and that there were five of them ?
For those who haven't finished yet, I wouldn't bother with scissors (unless you have a playful nature) and would just reprint the grid and rotate the contents of the 4 circles (as Tilbee suggested days ago) ...

Not using scissors and tape might be a risky strategy trux - when the rings are rotated numbers and bars are also in different positions compared to the original grid.

i think the precise wording in the preamble 'rotate the contents of....' would justify tilbee's [and my] approach to the problem, and it's by far the most efficient way of arriving at the finished result i think.

Many thanks for the link tenflags - amazing stuff. I notice Grimshaw among the clues and although no longer vetting, one or two clues have the Dimitry stamp on them n'est ce pas?

I think the title is an anagram of Co-vetters. (John) Grimshaw is included in the clues and the brilliance of construction has led all along to me suspecting his other co-vetter Kea as the setter, possibly along with John.

Hopefully you are right bellabee, but bars and numbers are also contained in the rings (the preamble could have stated 'rotate the letters of four rings')

but mysterons surely it would have just said 'rotate four rings' if we were expected to rotate them physically? i don't think either method fails to produce the end result though, so it's fairly academic really,
