What's the difference between a basketball and netball?
my daughter is delighted to be picked for the school netball team. She's not very sporty usually, and want to encourage exercise.
As her birthday's coming up, i thought she might like a portable net in the garden. In argos, the basketball ones are half the price of the netball ones. Are they more or less the same thing? Would it matter if she got basketball stuff, do you think?

Basketball hoops have a backboard ... so it's really easy to score, and requires very little skill. Of you miss, the ball still bounces back into the net.

A Netball hoop has no backboard. If you miss, the ball goes over the back.

Waaay more skillful.

I hate Basketball but oh JJ in Netball you don't have people throwing themselves in the way and you can't stop and have a free shot.

Yes, you have to pass, skillfully, rather than just running and bouncing the ball.

Netball is just a better game in every way.

I used to play netball as school myself. I'm only a short@rse though, so was never allowed to score :(
I've never experienced basketball though, and the costs are SO different. I thought it wouldn't matter.
Funny, I've been studying the bloomin' things online all week, trying to make the decision, and hadn't even noticed about the backplate!!

However basketball is faster and more fun to watch as netball is played mostly by gels who squeal a lot.....rather watch womens rugby myself

All the basketball matches I have ever seen (the number of which you can count on one hand because of the sheer tedium of it all) have finished up 104-102 or thereabouts.

It is a tedious game which consists of 7 foot tall players tear-arsing from one end of the pitch to the other, then jumping four or five feet in the air to dunk the ball through the hoop. If it is ever to appeal to the more discerning spectator (and there’s no sign that they want it to) It could do with a serious rewrite of the rules to make it far harder to score.

Netball...that's funny! This game is not played worldwide, not even in the Olympics. It's mostly played by British Commonwealth countries and a few other countries who want something to do. Yes, both Basketball and Netball are different games. Basketball has it's own appeal; it's fast paced and requires lot of skills. Netball is slow paced and requires some skills too. I prefer Basketball because it has the synergy, energy, skill-set, the high jumps, athleticism, strength, endurance and overall it's more fun. One thing I've noticed is that because of how Netball is sort of slow-paced, most of the fans and the spectator crowd tend to sit and not get as excited compared to Basketball fans. Netball fans are boring.....So Basketball RULES 110%. Economically, Basketball players make quadruple the amount more than weak Netball players. Basketball is played worldwide and appeals to more demographics than Netball, which is more prevalent in Australia and NZ. Even in Australia and NZ, their Rugby trumps Netball. So in all, Netball is at the bottom of the barrel compared to most sports.

There are multiple reasons why you think that your 'little crisgal' is finding it easier to score on your basketball hoop.
1. The basketball backboard is crappy and too unstable to judge your shots with, for example i bought my basketball hoop for $220 however i can still make a dramatically increased number of shots in it because its less professional than a normal one.

2. Your little 'crisgal' is shooting the ball too damn close to the basketball hoop so it easier.

3. Your basketball hoop isn't the correct height (10 feet) off the ground.

I play basketball at a very high level and whether your basketball hoop is the reason or not basketball is definetetely a harder sport than netball, technically and physically. To play basketball you must train and train and train to be a good player and even then you might not be as good as some players on your team. If your daughter played in the girls version of my team she would be sitting on the bench with a damn oxygen tank, it really is a hard sport. And the game is way more competitive and entertaining than a simple game of netball and that is the reason it is a lot more popular. Show your ignorance after you play the game. Tell your girl to play basketball because it is generally a lot better. Please rethink your opinion after watching the best player in basketball ever-Michael Jordan
