I love shopping at Waitrose, but the one big disappointment there is the bananas. Certainly in my local Waitrose, they only sell Fairtrade bananas and they're usually very poor quality. Yet, anytime I'm in Tesco, they have wonderful bananas on display. I can't understand why Waitrose will only sell this low-quality product. Surely they can't be THAT concerned about being seen to be PC, can they? How are the bananas in your nearest Waitrose?
I had thought that the majority of bananas being sold now are Fairtrade....this is so the producers get a fair price for their product, and should have no effect on the quality.
It has zero to do with pc.
I got some Costa Rica bananas in Lidl the other day, and they are pretty good. I'm particular, and won't ever buy Columbian bananas - they're a variety that doesn't ripen well, but go grey and rot. The best are from the Leeward and Windward Islands of the Caribbean. Unfortunately they're not as cheap for the supermarkets, so we suffer poorer quality produce so they can boost their profits.
When visiting a mate in Worthing, West Sussex, recently, we popped into their Waitrose, and yes their bananas were all Fair Trade and terrible quality. Even the guy sorting them admitted they'd had complaints but there were no plans to change to a better brand.
