Kate has confirmed that it is 9 letters.
She has also said that her letters come from:

short-sighted = myoPic
Moulding on top of cabinet = cOrnice
sceptical = Incredulous
utter = voIce
roadside resting place = laY bY (don't know which Y fits in)

Erm...folks....you've been led down the wrong path methinks!!! It's 122a that the answer pertains too...not 123a.....

The clue for 122a is Closeness......which would mean answer is PROXIMITY!!!
