normally I can get started on this, but am confused by some of the grid references.
14a says 8 letters the grid only gives 3 there are others as well. am I not reading Antico's explanation correctly. I thought maybe it's to do with Prokofiev any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You're right about Prokofiev, and you're looking for a work of his where each character (the grid entries for the starred clues) are represented by different instruments (the solved clue).
It gave me a headache, but it's very satisfying when you've completed it.
