Not one to unfairly criticise the Daily Mail, but this time I think they have gone too far.
Yes this time they are using words such as 'Britain's thought police' because a black person (and a female at that) happens to have been found guilty of racially aggravated harassment, against another female who happens to be Asian.
/// Shirley Brown is surprised that she has been so harshly treated over the fact that she called the Asian councillorJay Jethwa a 'Coconut'.///
/// I’m devastated that after all my hard work for the community I’ve got a criminal record for racism.///
I wonder if she would have had the same feelings, if the 'racist insult' had been directed at her (especially if they had been from a white person)? I would have thought not only would she be calling for the insulting person to be punished to the full letter of the law, but she would also be demanding a large sun of money in compensation.
/// The word coconut is used as slang to describe someone who is believed to be betraying their ethnic roots by pandering to white opinion – referring to a coconut being brown on the outside but white on the inside. ///
I wonder what the term is used for a white person who panders to black opinion?

//Coconut - anything or anyone that is white on the inside but brown on the outside
chicanos and other decendents of brown spanish speaking people that can't or won't speak spanish, act white, and are ashamed of their heritage. //
It is clearly a racially motivated insult. She was prosecuted and found guilty. End of.

the first time i experienced any kind of racism, it was a while ago now, was from a policeman who said words that are unprintable on here, to my black friends at a club, much to my horror, the second was from a black woman, whose words to me were every bit as awful, the gist was why was i dating a black man, i was a white ......
Racism exists in all societies, you can do your best to stamp it out, but its an uphill battle,

/// Will you be remembering this matter, next time you are bemoaning 'one-way racism' ? ///
When I bemoan 'one-way racism' I am referring to when it is not taken seriously when there is a racist incident committed against a white person, committed by a black or Asian person.
This case was a racist incident but committed by a black person upon an Asian person.

/// Sorry, oldgit, but "yes" or "no" is an answer.///
Wow, why do some take everything so literally?
Of course 'yes' and 'no' are answers, but what I was trying to convey was the fact that just to say 'yes' or 'no' doesn't fully answer a persons questions, they generally need a more in depth reply that just 'yes' or 'no', and are very quick to demand this, especially on the news section of Answer Bank.
I hope this exclamation has in some way explained my comment, but I won't hold my breath.

Quite correct Miss, a simple mistake not pointed out by my spell checker of course.
But I will take my slate and stand in the dunce's corner if it so pleases.
Please carry on in your valuable position, that being 'prime English teacher for AnswerBank', but be careful that you don't make any slip-ups, but then that is not likely since you never type very much anyway, do you?.
