Burn on a table

My darling husband put a sizzling griddle across 2 table mats on our lovely wooden table the other evening. Unfortunately there was a gap between the mats and there is now a horrible white burn mark. How can I remove this or at least make it look not as bad? Thank you for any advice.

had a similar prob - my table was highly polished and had an enormouse oval white mark from a casserole dish - I used toothpaste on a soft cloth and you can't see a thing now - don't be too vigorous - take it gently but t/paste really works. great for mirrors too.
