Froghole, French Street, Toy's Hill, Ide Hill, Westerham Brewery.

Hi

I am leading a walk next Sunday that starts from Edenbridge (Kent) and passes through Froghole, French Street, Toy's Hill, Ide Hill and goes by the Westerham Brewery. I like to provide info about the derivation or history of the places where we pass to the others in the group but can't find any reference to the above names on Google!

French Street might simply have taken its name from that of the local landowner. (The name 'le Frensch' was recorded as far back as 1273, and was probably in use well before then).

Froghole probably means exactly what you would think that it would mean. In Sussex, for example, Clapham and Patching Cricket Club play at "Frog's Hole', with Wikipedia stating:
"The village pitch name, Frog's Hole, relates to the large number of frogs that inhabited the wet surroundings"
