Sainsburys

Been reading the thread about Morrisons and thought I'd have a moan about my local Sainsburys. You might think I am being a miserable git but the checkout staff (two in particular) are so bl**dy 'chatty' its worse than the hairdressers. I really don't want to discuss with a falsely grinning checkout girl where I am going at the weekend and if I have had a good day at work - I wouldn't mind but they do it to everyone as though they have been given a script. Just scan my bl**dy shopping woman and let me get out of this hell hole as quickly as I can. I stand in the queue thinking of things to tell them to shut them up! Hi! And how has your day been? Well actually, the pipes leaked so I was late for work, so I got the sack, came home early and found my other half in bed with the plumber, and in his haste to climb out of the bedroom window he jumped on my car and caused £2,000 worth of damage! So my day has actually been bl**dy broccoli thank you for asking! (Or is it just me? LOL)

Anyway, I'd agree there is an optimum level of friendly chat, it ought not delay the scanning, and one needs a feel for who approves and who wants to remain quiet on the part of the staff. Trouble is different folk have different feelings towards the chat. Some think it makes it a friendly place to visit, other feel it's an unnecessary intrusion that puts them off shopping there. It's down to the people skills of the individual at the till to judge it correctly.

Smiling, friendly, yes, but just a good morning or good afternoon is all that is necessary. The customer would instigate conversation if they wanted to.
The grinning gibbons that are in my local store seem to be having a competition to see who can get as much conversation in. I suppose working in that environment they need something to fulfil their days, but please let it be someone else.

Don't even get me started on those bl**dy self service checkouts! I have never used one and managed to get the whole shopping through without an assistant having to come over and do something to it! Makes me feel a right tw*t. And why are they all standing around the self service checkouts - surely they would be better employed opening another till! As you may have gathered I hate supermarkets!
What?? Try to order anything on a bl**dy computer? You're having a laugh! Another moan is the vouchers you get for discount if you spend a zillion pounds - what about those of us who can only afford to spend a few quid a week - we never get anything given to us. And what happened to small portions of meat etc.? My local co-op before it closed down did small joints of meat but Sainsbury's seem to only have big joints or special offers on multi buys. I actually prefer to go into a corner shop or even the garage for odds and ends but as Sainsbury's is right opposite my kitchen window it makes sense to go there. I do however like their bread - poppy seed bloomers! But 'Tiger Bread' - whats that all about eh? And there's always loads of it left, when they have sold out of the normal crusty stuff.
I'm sure the self service tills are found by some to be quick & easy; but personally I think it lacks respect for the customer to not even provide the till service. No longer do they actually serve you your purchases, which in a super/hyper store one can understand, but they don't even want to make contact when taking the money. I'd be less anti them if they were put at he far end of the store away from the other tills, so we don't have to hear the automated voice drone on, and the incessant noises. Certainly any store that has only them operating, and no one on the tills, loses my custom.
I typed out a message of complaint to Tesco yesterday but for the opposite reason to yours. Sadly their contact form would only allow 1000 characters which was way short of what I needed.
Every time I go to that Tesco the staff are just plain rude. I normally use the self service check outs because you get more conversation out of them then the miserables cows sitting behind the checkouts are so busy chatting away to other people that they can't even be bothered to acknowledge you. They don't tell you how much your shopping totals, just hold their hand out for cash and when they give you the change they just dump it on the side instead of putting it in your hand.
But what really p1ssed me off yesterday was walking down an isle to find my pathway was blocked by a group of 7 employees idly chatting away about how drunk they got on one of their birthdays with no consideration for the fact that there were customers around who were trying to get past them. I did say 'excuse me, please' but in a way that told them I thought they were arses. Whenever I have worked in shops I have always felt there is a certain way to behave around customers and to treat them.
