Anyone know the best way to book London theatre tickets ?

If you're prepared to take a chance on what you might get to see, half-price and discounted tickets are sold to personal callers, on the day of the performance, at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. (It's the ONLY 'official' outlet for such tickets within central London, but there's another branch at Brent Cross. It's run by the Society of London Theatre, which represents all of London's theatres):

For advance booking, you should always go through the agency appointed by the theatre or the company behind the show. (It's usually Ticketmaster, but not always).

The links from those pages will take you to the website of the show, or of the theatre. Then you click on the 'Booking' link there, confident in the knowledge that you're being directed to the OFFICIAL sales outlet (and not to one of dozens of other agencies, which might not be trustworthy or reliable).

It depends on the show vauny. If at all possible book with the theatre itself. If not book with the agent appointed by that theatre. Its often Ticketmaster (Wicked) or Seetickets (Billy Elliott) and others.

If its an Ambassadors Thetare they have their own booking system (Ghost, Love Never Dies, Legally Blonde)

Google the name of the show and find the official website for that show then follow the link to book tickets. Do not go via any other route.

Which show are you hoping to book for? I'll check it out for you.

PS Chris - Your Official London Theatre website is OK and serves as a good listing but it still only links to Ticketmaster for any show when you click on"Book tickets". Ticketmaster are legit but expensive.

If for example you wish to go to the National Thetare you can book with them directly for a very small fee. I recommend going to the individual website for the show in question.

try lastminute they often have very good offers,some including a meal and icket for less than ticket face value, twice when booking with them i have been upgraded to better seats. have a look

Sorry I take it back, if you click on the show you're interested in and scroll down past the options ot book tickets you will find the website for the theatre/show.
