Clue for 17 across was Archers location guarding crossing after leaders of Saxons take battle in 1066.

Clue for 22down was reporter's first with a parliamentarian's scams
17a ST (leaders of Saxon Take) AMBRIDGE (Archers) FORD (crossing)
= ST AM FORD BRIDGE - a battle in 1066

Thanks everybody for the answers, my history is obviously a bit rusty as one always associated 1066 with the battle of Hastings where of course Harold got an arrow in his eye.
