Returning to the subject of the Isle of Man and its TT races, it is amazing that the whole island is drastically changed during the race fortnight. Nearly everywhere there is the lingering smell of gasoline, and the sounds of motorbikes revving up and racing can be heard from 6 o’clock in the morning during practice week. Because the races are held on main roads, these are obviously closed to the rest of us and sometimes getting around the Island can be fraught with difficulty, as everyone has to avoid the main, circular, route round the Island and so all the traffic jams up along the side roads.
Along Douglas sea front there is also the difficulty of the horse tram that trots its way up and down the centre of the promenade, adding to the traffic chaos, as this takes priority over all other forms of transport and everything must stop to let the horse through. These horses have learned to count – each knows when it has done its required number of trips and stops automatically outside its stable when its time is up.

If cars seem difficult to negotiate, there is always the train. The electric train runs from the capital to the north of the Island with a branch going off up the mountain in the middle. This is Snaefell, and is barely classed as a mountain, being only just over the 2,000 feet necessary to be called such. In fact, it has eroded over the years and many Manx people climb up it with sacks full of stones and rocks to place at the top in an attempt to keep the one and only mountain intact.
The old Victorian steam train runs from the south to the capital and many is the trip I have taken on it with my granddaughter, rattling along on its narrow gauge through valleys and glens, up hills and down dales, whistling as it goes. The sheep in the fields alongside still run away as it approaches even though it puffs past four or more times a day. Despite the fact that the Island has become known as a financial centre and a tax haven, it is still delightfully old-fashioned and visitors feel they are being taken back in time.

According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I shall follow this rule on word length, in that each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!
