Anyone know the name of the 1980's Japanese puppet sci-fi show that involved a team of pilots driving assorted vehicles that joined up to make a giant red robot with an x on its forehead?

They were called the Transformers. You can find a lot about them on www.transformers.com
The show in question may have been 'Star Fleet'. The robot in question was the Dai-X, and formed, much like a Power Rangers Megazord, when the three separate vehicles piloted by Shiro Hagen, Johnny Hercules (I think) and the fat gingerheaded boy joined together. Pretty good show as I remember. Pity it's never been repeated
Definitely Starfleet, and Brian May of Queen sang the theme music ;-)
