20000 leagues

If 1 league = approximately 3 miles, then 20,000 would be 60,000 miles, this leaves me confused regarding the novel by Jules Verne 20,000 leagues beneath the sea, is it possible??

Can't remember the details but didn't that submarine have an island base where it was resupplied.

If you look at Nemo's course through the Atlantic and Pacific on the maps on the above page it is easy to see where the distance came from.

ayg you can travel UNDER the sea like a submarine does, if it went round the world a few times, it would travel tens of thousands of miles.

Not very logical Vallaw. A very close friend died a few days ago. I am playing on here to take my mind off it. Of course we all have other things to worry about. This is a little distraction

As a small reminder, the title of this category is "Science". I seem unwittingly to have upset some people, for which I apologise. However, I am still puzzled about the scientific basis of this problem. I can see that it could be a linguistic difficulty, or even one of literary criticism. I am not psychic so could not be expected to have knowledge of the circumstances of others "playing" here.

Since the questioner thought the title of the book related to the depth of the ocean, it's not unreasonable to post a question here but to be honest, I didn't give the location of the question a second's thought.
