Clue- Workmen sometimes give a wolf ? when a good-looking girl passes by. Then add s for south.

Thanks SO much quinie - I couldn't get past it being a type of animal I was looking for and now feel incredibly stupid.
I even tried to work on just the letter count and looked at all the 8 letter words ending in S but did not make the connection at all.
Really kind of you to point me in the right direction.

Hi,RECA123 no need to feel stupid. I was doing exactly the same as you (thinking animal). Actually I typed wolf into the phrase part of my Crossword Puzzle Solver and whistle came up! Had never heard of Whistles till I googled it so it was just a shot in the dark. Good luck with the quiz.
