Ok, so I kind of have a few scenes and a partial storyline to a film that scared me as a little child, but I dont have the title. Can you help?

There is a man who lives on his own in a town house. I remember a red ball kept bouncing down the stairs, this carried on over a few nights until the man got so annoyed he threw the ball off of a bridge into a river. He got back home and the red ball came bouncing back down the stairs, when he picked it up it was wet. There was also an attic with there was a babys bath in which I think the ghost of the house (turned out to be a little boy) was drowned. From what I can picture it was a late 70s early 80s film. I'm BEGGING for your help on this one, its been driving me mad for 4 months!

Oh im going nuts now as I remember that film. It turned out the little boy "Edwardian" had been drowned by his father because he was a cripple and I recall his wheelchair being pushed down the stairs by him. Must go Google!
Was it "The Changeling", starring George C Scott.
This film was indeed "The Changeling" I remember there being a banging throughout the film. This was down to the boy being drowned in the tin bath and he was thumping the sides of the bath with his fists.
