Any help, first letter probably is an 'L', but apart from lords or lards I can't seem to justify it.

I think it's probably HERDS
1d is MORCHA so herds would fit

Mark Rae - Yes you are right with herds, its an anagram of sherd (a dialect word for a gap).

What is the explanation for 40ac ('Sheltered ...)? I have the puzzle solved, but the logic of this clue defeats me.

Re HERDS - it's not an anagram, it's cycled.
We have 1st letter as H so possibly herds
We have h as 1st letter possibly giving herds but not 100%
