Last question : 40A : Discharged (7) : _M_T_E_ : I've seen suggestions of both EMITTED and EMPTIED - it could be either. Google word association comes up with 4.8 million hits for emitted, and 17.2 million hits for emptied. What do the great minds on Answerbank think is best?

I preferred 'emptied' too - both Chambers & Collins give 'discharge' in their definitions for 'empty', but neither do for 'emit'.

I suppose it'll come down to what the compiler was thinking when they set the puzzle...

I prefer emptied. Discharge is given as a definition for to empty.
