many thanks, kkm.have you no full explanation of the other two?Can only see SH + OLDER in clue for 18;"old lover...love...romance..." makes no sense to me in 13!
Please could you tell us the clues?
Question Author
The only one I still don't get fully is SHAREHOLDER as solution to "Mum about to enage senior partner in firm, say?".I can only see SH (=mum) + OLDER (=senior).Any idea now?
could 'hare' mean 'to engage'?

i've seen a definition; To excite; to tease, or worry; to harry.

Just a thought...

Dear chelle:I notice you're on both forums, too!Still looking for that meaning in dictionaries & online:that could be the explanation,I suppose.Funny nobody else is joining in as usual with an immediate & convincing answer!Or is the clue just weak:poorly constructed, maybe?!
Hi Maurice, i'm also surprised there aren't more people answering your posts. This isn't a crossword I usually do (bit difficult for me!).
Maybe your not the only one struggling with it?

Hope you get it sorted :)
The best i could come up with was HIRE for engage but SHIREHOLDER doesn't sound like SHAREHOLDER to me
Question Author
In the meantime I've sent it off, optimistically hoping AB's explanation is good enough! If that is the case (can't really believe it),then my opinion of the setter has taken a knocking! In any case it's now time for a siesta before the massive task of writing Xmas cards.........................
Could the answer be 'stakeholder' rather than 'shareholder'?

'take' (engage, as in taken/engaged) inside 'sh' (mum) + 'older' (senior)
Yes, I prefer STAKEHOLDER.
I assumed that the answer was known to be right and we were just trying to explain it.
Maurice- can you retrieve your envelope?
Question Author
Oh my God!Does SHIREHOLDER really exist? It's not in Chambers! One letter wrong & all that effort will have been in vain!
It will be stakeholder, I'm sure
Question Author
I think the word sh*t is now appropriate even if taboo, as NO! I can't retrieve it!Oh well, at least I can sleep now.......................
