It's like your driving license number, it will identify you but on reading it does not detail your date of birth..
It's generally a number stamped on various different parts of the vehicle, it will identify the vehicle when entered in a database (don't tell me which one, or who can enter it!) and can be used to ensure that the vehicle is not a simple cut and shut... (although it would be possible to copy the same VIN number to the relevent locations that it would be expected to be found...
If you call your renault dealer, they should be able to tell you what bhp the car is from the VIN number.
Make sure you've got the engine code handy as well as they may also require this.
