Four letter word

My friend has just rung as she is stuck on the last clue (I don't know which magazine).

The clue is 'faint odour' and she has _a_t.

I have agreed the answers which give her the a and the t and the only answer we can come up with is 'fart'...............surely that can't be right?

I thought of waft but the definition given was soft breeze, which doesn't indicate any odour need be present.
