It was renamed 'Queenstown' to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria, to Ireland, in 1849, and remained a British Naval Base until 1937.
Naval ships sailed from there, in 1915, to search for survivors from the Lusitania, which had been torpedoed by a German submarine; a monument to the 1198 dead stands in Casement Square, and many of them are buried in the Old Church Cemetery.
Irish Folklore has it that the Irish dock staff saw the Titanic's number, which was recorded as 390904, reflected in windows, and it was read as 'No Pope'. Apparently, it foretold doom for the ship; I will leave it to others to decide, and discuss.
