21d old = O, we = WE penned in R-LL = rare lines, so writer = ORWELL.

knew 14a was anagram but could not get it had shoe on brain instead of shop, thanks all
4d is a bad clue: small = S, kind = ILK although every good dictionary explains that ILK doesn't mean that at all. But it's so common a mistake...
S+ilk = silk

When you posted your question, I guess you missed the Ed's instructions at the top of the page, specifically that there is a subsection of Quizzes & Puzzles dedicated to crossword questions...
?? bert - Chambers has - "ilk ... type, kind"
Lie-in King - I'm pretty sure that meaning's only appeared like that in the latest edition, and the previous ones listed it but said it was erroneous. In Scotland we would only use ILK to mean "each" or "same".
