I have solved the crossword but cannot get over the final hurdle-shading in the grid to arrive at the two word "special occasion" which is surely "diamond jubilee" e.g. there are no "Ms" in the grid

I have deems for 1 across which gives you the m in diamond. I can not really see the word play for it but I can not think what else it would be.

Not doing this, but the answer does sound as if it should be your suggestion. Have you double checked your answers for the grid letters to make sure you haven't accidentally mispelt a word. Good Luck with it.

I surely will but I have already done this-3 "unclued" entries were DINNER JACKET, DISC JOCKEY and DON JUAN so I am sure about DIAMOND JUBILEE. If any solvers out there are doing this Oldie Xword I'd really like some advice. But thanks for responding.

Sorry it is 3 across, not 1 across.

for 3a I have jeeps (J..PS) which fits with 4d (erie) and 5d (ear) but keep on helping..I can't find any errors in my grid yet but there must be some, I guess

Of course, DEEMS fits also..sorry, senior moment! Was there a Justice Smeed?
Question Author
Got it! SEED (beginning) backwards around the 'silent' M. Thank you. All I need now is another copy of the crossword to make my correction to "JEEPS" ! (and there was a Justice Smeed).
I have had a struggle with this crossword so thanks for all the comments above. The words DIAMOND JUBILEE are in the shape of a diamond (what else) starting with the M in DEEMS at the top and ending with I in OIL at the bottom. What is the relevance of the three unclued entries though?
