heard a riddle on the radio the other day but i missed the answer, it's been bugging me all week,  can anyone help?

This man wants to get into a very exclusive club but he isnt a member so he decides to wait around and see what happens.  a member comes up to the doorman.  the doorman says '12' the member says '6' and the doorman lets him in.  another guy comes up to him.  the doorman says '6' the guy says '3' and the doorman lets him in.  by this time the dude thiks he's heard enough so he goes up to the doorman.  the doorman says '10', he says '5' but he doesnt get let in.  what should he have said and why?

How about '4' in response to '10'?

Opposite digits on a clockface.

Not a bad guess but 6 & 3 are not opposite each other
3, the number of letters required to spell ten.
I agree with cowpat, the response is the number of letters contained in the 'number'.
