This is 'Don Corleone' back again.
I am sure that I told you all in my first time in this seat, that I have been sports mad from a very early age. My first sports books were Stanley Matthews annuals. How I wish that I still had them - to sell, probably. I supported his team, Blackpool, in the same way that the youngsters of recent years have supported Liverpool and Manchester United, the most successful teams with many of the top players.
I have been interested in football statistics since I purchased a Penguin book '60 Seasons of League Football', in the late 1950's. In my Civil Service career, I was a member of one of our Departmental sports quiz teams, that met every week in winter in competition. It was claimed to be the biggest sports quiz league in the world, with several divisions. A Department or Ministry could have more than one team, usually comprising six members, of whom any four played at one time. This covered London, with a few teams from just outside London. We always beat one team that had Kevin Ashman (the Egghead) as a player. He was unable to answer every question as the majority went to individual team members. The only sport I have never been attracted to is greyhound racing, where I have attended only one meeting. You could say that 'I did not go to the Dogs'.
