It may well be on the north shore of the Firth of Forth that the espaliered apples and pears in the Gen2 walled garden are gathering girth and weight even if threatened by the dire codling moth.
However, looking round the Strix patch in Sassenach Wessex, there is little if any fruit dangling off the branches of the pear and apple trees. And what there is is tiny and unlikely to ripen into anything worth picking or eating this autumn.
Even the cherries, in their pre-pubescent state, have all been picked off the tree by blackbirds, jackdaws and rooks.
