You have 44 coins arranged in 4 piles of 11 coins. Their values are pound coins,  10p's, 5p's and 1p's.

As the question is stated, there isn't a unique answer.  You could have 29 piles each worth 44p, for example - either 4 x 10p + 4 x 1p or 2 x 20p + 2 x 2p.

Can you give an indication as to what would make one solution better than another?  Fewer coins? Fewer piles? Piles that differ from each other but still give the same number of each denomination across the total sum (if that is possible)?
