I doubt very much that the crossword checker will rule out an entry. They will pull out a few entries and scan them to check they look right. I doubt they examine every letter in detail anyway.

Commonly, people think S is english and Z is american. The correct use is a Z where the word originates from Greek, so maximiZe and not maximiSe for example.
