I once went into some public toliets in Alabama. There was a sign on the front door 'Beware of Homosexuals'. There was a sign on the cubicle 'Beware of Homosexuals' There was a sign on the bottom of the door. I bent down to read it and it said 'You've been warned twice!'
I was talking about this to a friend, my friend's son is gay and is in a happy long-term relationship. My friend was saying that it horrifies him to think that not so many years ago his son would have been breaking the law.

We have a long way to go before we can be considered to be a civilised species.
LOL

One of my pals crashed in my bed after we'd been out last night. Sadly, she didn't make a gay play for me, because she's pretty. I was really trolleyed. She could easily have taken advantage of me, ha ha. Hey, hang on ... maybe she did! Damn, I missed it!
(that was LOL at snafu's joke, not at wolf's serious point, obviously)
I worked with a guy in the early-mid 60's and he was obviously gay, which I thought a shame as I'd have quite fancied him. This was when homosexuality was illegal, but no-one would have ever considered reporting him............we thought the law was ridiculous.
> she didn't make a gay play for me, because she's pretty

Can't gay women be pretty, then...?
Okay, okay, MR ... not my best structured sentence.
DMs and Dungarees do tend to play down any attractive features that may be there.
is it any different today? I know quite a few gay people and absolutely everything in their lifestyle has to be gay. Their social group, where they go to drink, their style, their music taste.

Being gay is more than acceptable but they hardly drag themselves into the 21st century.
They do have the best bars. My pals and I drink in some of the local gay bars, coz they're just really jolly, and the Princess Victoria (local lesbian pub) is one of our occasional hang outs.
There is still an assumption among some people that gays are butch if female or camp if male. Since times have moved on, it has become obvious that that isn't the case and there are thousands of gay men and women who have come out, or were never in, who are perfectly normal in manner and appearance. It's sad that such people had to keep their private lives secret in the past, though some of the old prejudice does linger still , though dying.
half a dozen blokes went into a gay pub just before closing time for a quick pint,
a deathly hush, strange looks from the customers, one of the patrons recognised us, came over and spoke to us, air cleared straight away and we enjoyed a couple of pints. Not a bad night, first time Id been in a gay pub.
