2) I believe the answer is SNELL'S LAW, also known as the Law of Refraction. A heron, standing on the edge of a lake, for instance, waiting to spear a fish, needs to know that refraction of light by the water causes the fish to appear shallower than it actually is. So the Heron needs to aim lower than the fish appears to be. Google "refractive index".
