How do we know when we should not offer an answer?

Sibton, though you may well have seen me point out the closing date when a while away, I would never ever tell anyone they should not answer.
The only reason I occasionally give clues is I am an avid quizzer and do not like to give the game away - however most times the clue is ignored and someone does.
You answer as and when you see fit, tis just my funny way. :-)
