On a phone in on the Matthew Wright show ( CH5) this morning a woman phoned in & said she spends £8 per week on lottery tickets, and has done for 18 years. She has only won one £50 prize in all that time.

It made me think just how much over the years has she spent?

Anyone good at maths?

8 x 52 x 18 = haven't got a calculator handy! x
£7488!!
£7488 8x52x18
£7,488 (Based on 8 x 52 x 18)
About £8000
£7,488.
- £50 though.
8 x 52 x 18 = £7488:00 spent
Winnings £50:00

Total Loss £7438:00.

Now there's a good deal. not!!
with that outlay per week i find it hard to believe that she's only won £50 in eighteen years
£7488
Based on £8 per week I am getting £7,488 (£416 per year)

Hope springs eternal

Now if she had put it in the bank over those 18years what with interest would she have now? (probably around £10.000 d'ya think?)

My OH spends £18 per week on the lottery. He wins (not the jackpot) on a regular basis.
"What about the extra days in leap years ?"

In any eight years there can be a maximum of three leap years, adding three days. This may mean you take part in one more draw (since it is drawn twice a week and jemisa did not say whether the £8 was spent in a single draw or spread over the two) but it depends what day you started playing, what day the leap "day" fell, etc.

BTW the original question did not require "maths". It is simple mental arithmetic.
i've made a very small yearly profit on the lottery since it started
lcg76 - you have got a calculator handy.
Just type
8*52*18 in your google search box and press 'enter'
With her winnings of £50, she's £7438 down
