The answer last month about Marillion.

Did anyone else answer Electric Gypsy?

Can I appeal.

Stevee - We put Silmarillion as our answer as that was the first thing which came up when I googled.  I've just scouted around now and I think you have a case.  Their official website has Electric Gypsy as the first name though it was apparently a short lived instrumental group.

I also had Electric Gypsy, from Marillion's own website. I wouldn't normally believe a website over the printed word, but book references were inconsistent with differering dates and names. I'd like to know what their source was, since they said rather dismissively "not Electric Gypsy which was defunct by 1978". Not according to the group's own website! I was annoyed that they refused to comment on the query line, since this question took by far the greatest time to research.

The band members a fair bit changed when they became Silmarillion, so i don't think you'll have a case. I think the website merely tracks the members of Marillion and the bands they used to be in and not necessarily the history of Marillion itself.

It'd be like saying the the Beautiful South used to be called the Housemartins just because Paul Heaton was in both.

I dunno though, plus I'm bais though as I put Silmarillion!

mldr79 I researched this quite deeply.

Doug Irvine and Mick Pointer were in the band Electric Gypsy (who were a trio) They were both in Silmarillion.

On thier official website they show Electric Gypsy as the start of Marillion. There are no bands prior to Electric Gypsy.

I think its conclusive and cannot see why it isn't.
