just watched super scrimpers and a man on it put old curtain gripper strips around the tops of his garden wall to deter burglars - i was under the impression that this was illegal...?

if so, isnt that a bit of an irresponsible 'tip' to show on national TV?

many years ago my dad put broken glass shards all around the shop back yard and the walls of what is now my house.

no-one has even complained, police or otherwise, but i thought it was illegal to put it there now.

whats the law here?

i'm just curious, no intention of doing it.

thanks

No idea, but I'd have thought gripper wasn't as viscous as broken glass. Not likely to slit your wrists or jugular on gripper.
I would think it's illegal, after all you can't injure those nasty burglars can you.................
Not sure if it's actually illegal but I'm pretty sure you would be liable if someone injured themselves on it.
I would be more concerned about wildlife and wandering cats.
Barb wire is legal so I don't see the diffrence
....and as woofgang says you can't hurt those nice cats which come to crap in your garden.
Some laws are so stupid. Surely a burglar trespassing deserves what might happen to them if trying to scale a wall topped with sharp objects.

Off the top of my head I seem to remember 8ft being the minimum height for a wall of such, plus you would need a small sign/signs to the effect that the wall had glass etc on the top of it.
Last year my neighbour and I put up the plastic equivalent of broken glass on our 6 feet high walls. These strips came with warning signs and the Police inspected & approved the whole installation.
Found this:

Barbed wire (or similar) must not be used below 1.8m in height. With warning signage it may be used between 1.8m & 2.4m but could still be required to be removed by the highways authority if bounding the street or public pathways in this height range. Above 2.4m it is not restricted nor needs signage.

Occupiers Liability Act 1984 s5
As I live in Zimbabwe I have razor wire and electric fence on my 7' wall.
This is probably covered by the Occupiers Liability Act of 1984, plus the case law since that time and the original act of 1957. As craft 1948 says you must look after everyone.
