Why Does My Dog Eat Poo.

I have two 11 month old lakeland cross JR terriers and the boy eats poo,
not his own poo but his sisters. I give them top quality complete puppy food
and mixer meal, and have even tried putting pineapple chunks in their food as
suggested on a web site but it is not a deterent. They are not bored they get
4 miles walk every day and have a large play area and toys. I find it upseting because they are really good and house trained but he always wants to give lots
of kisses (yuck) can anyone help? Thanks.

During a British Arctic Survey in the 1950s, the huskies were found to be eating the scientists frozen poo as it melted in the spring. The scientists diet had been arranged so that all the nutrition in their food would be used up, and only non-digestables, e.g. fibres, would be excreted. They thought that the diet couldn't have been worked out properly, and the sled dogs must be getting some advantage from this. Wrong! Analysis of the poo showed there were no remaining nutrients at all. Conclusion? The dogs simply liked the taste!!

My male JRT used to do that too, he wasn't fussy, he would leap straight into the cat's litter tray the minute she'd been, or hoover up the chicken poo in the garden. When we took him out for country walks I reckon he thought a banquet had been laid out for him with all the sheep and rabbit poo!
Can't offer advice, but he did grow out of it, so hopefully yours will too.

A friends dog eats dog and cat poo, they find it hilarious. It doesn't worry me, but I will not allow it to give me a kiss!

I knew all about this behavioural problem from a vet - its called coprophagia, a deficiency in nutrients.

Their digestive systems are very poor at extracting nutrients so I guess nature has taught them that it still has some dietary value.

Please realise that the dog has no interest in conforming to your ideas of right and wrong.
It's an animal and will do what animals do.

Dogs do it, that's all. Their dams ate their faeces when they were pups[ it's conceivable that it is 'puppy behaviour', imitating that. Some dogs acquire the habit when they are grown. Some of mine , but not all, do it, which suggests that it is not compensating for some dietary deficiency since they have the same diet and all are healthy. I think they just like it; mine are quite discerning, in that each has its preferred material.
