I think the heart of Yorkshire is the great west window in York Minster.
I dont know the answer to number 1. doorknob but could it be that great bumstain of a statue of an angel at Gateshead??
In response to 1. - there is "York Central", the teardrop-shaped land hemmed in by railway lines. That may prove to be quite promising(?)
don't see how Angel of the North could be a teardrop on the face of Yorkshire when it's not in Yorkshire.

Locals(in Tyne and Wear) call the statue:-

'The Gateshead Flasher'
