Why Do People Bother At All?

I'm sifting through CV's to narrow down a list of people we want to interview to replace me.

I can't believe some of the sheer laziness in the applications. Almost none of them bothered including a covering letter and so many of the CV's are not even finished. They've list a job title and year, with absolutely not description. There's spelling and grammar errors everywhere. I've got a few that are at least four pages long, just full of pointless rambling. They clearly haven't even bothered to proof read.

Then there are the ones who haven't kept one job for longer than 6 months but have filled out on the accompanying questionnaire that their expected salary is up between £28-£35k. What planet are these people on?

I mean, do they really look at these things and feel like they're bound to get a job on the back of the pieces of crap?

Some, not all, maybe a few, will just submit anything so they can fill out their work diary to prove they are actively seeking work.

(ps don't start Dotty on this subject, they're a pet hate of hers for the same reason as you!)

I'm so tempted to write back to some of these people saying, you're not getting an interview and then explain why.

The lack of a letter cuts both ways - thousands of applications receive NO acknowledgment whatever.

I know Canary, I've been job seeking and it's frustrating when you get no response at all. I will be replying to everyone but I can see why some companies don't bother if they get hundreds of CV's and they're all as crap as these then why should they bother if they applicant hasn't.

Do you use application form or just CV? I always found it better with an application form as people tend to have to concentrate a bit more than that whereas CVs can just be mass produced.

Saying that, my personal statements have always been generic and I would go in and alter/add bits for specific jobs.

It used to amaze me when I looked at the candidates qualifications, they had good grades but they didn't seem to have any common sense or enthusiam at all. One lad turned up he looked to be wearing his Dad's suit, too big for him all round. He had a decent CV so I took pity on him, turned out to be a good worker.

I don't mind emailing my cv, I just wish some businesses had a robot to send out a reply acknowledging receipt.
With the cost of postage, I doubt companies would bother replying to all, which is probably why some don't enclose an s.a.e. for the same reason.

Just a CV China. We need to get someone in quickly so I put an ad on one of the job sites that also goes to the local paper on Friday.

On an industrial estate near me in the seventies you might get one a month
asking if any jobs were going these days it is around 6 to 10 people asking
some days a lot more.
This is how bad the job market is , They are trying to find work just walking
round them whole estate asking at every unit even when they have to walk
past a sign at the gate saying No Vacancies.

Chap I knew once was told he'd been on jobseekers allowance too long ( he'd been made redundant at 56) and told he had to go on a job-finding course where he would have to write and send off twelve or more applications every day.
Whether he could do the jobs or not. Whether he wanted to do the jobs or not.
I suppose this is a sort of scatter-gun approach on the part of the agencies being paid by the government to get people off welfare.
