Anybody encounterd this before? Just got back from a friends funeral After having a talk with his wife, She was telling me to have him dressed & buried in a suit- of the family's choice & if anybody wanted to go view him in the chapel of rest, It would cost £75 for the dressing & £75 for the viewing. Surley this cant be right ? On the top of the 4 figure sum . They had already spent to lay her husband to rest? XX

My friends wife/family, Everybody who spopke to my friends wife told her there's got to be some kind of injustice there?
The Ryanair of Undertakers obviously.

It's the first I've heard of it, but to be honest, it doesn't exactly surprise me. I suppose they could argue that it is extra work for them?

Perhaps other undertakers charge, but "hide" it under dispursements?

Without a doubt a Canary42 No wonder you never see a skint undertaker!!

It does seem an extortionate amount, but when you think about it, if a body is going to be viewed, it would require extra work to make it look more presentable, whereas if no-one was going to view, the body could be left "as is".

Still sounds like a right rip-off though.

My dad died of cancer. Quite a lot of work must have gone into making him look like his old self. They did a brilliant job.
Sorry Headwreck, your post wasn't there when I started typing.

There was definitely a "dispursements" fee listed on my uncle's bill. Don't know the exact figure, but there was definitely an "undefined" charge. Should've been more thorough I guess, on what we were paying for.

Sad though it is, at the end of a day, undertakers are running a business and want your cash. :o(

aving said that, I'm sure there are plenty who are very fair and caring.
^^^Oops, I forgot this......H

Hi Liverpoolfoo, long time no speak - sorry to read about your friend's loss. It could just be that this particular Funeral Director has itemised everything and that is why this shows up , I think you do pay more if viewing is required.
I think £75 for both is reasonable but not each.

Ok Folks i can appreciate a fee for viewing maybe, But to charge somebody a fee just to dress them in "There Sunday best" So to speak. Lets get serious please
I'm not at all clued up on what actually goes on, but I went to see my friend's husband recently. He was already "ready for viewing" as my friend had been the day before.

I turned up and asked to see him. They told me they would "get him ready for me" and I sat for about 20 minutes in the reception, before somebody called me through. They must've been doing something to him while I waited. Is it possible that they return the body to a cold-store between each viewing? That would account for extra costs.

I noticed that he was made up with quite a lot of facial make-up too. Perhaps that gets touched-up between viewings? I'm only guessing here, but it would explain the "extra" charge for viewing.
