If we hadn't been given those letters I'd have suggested UPPER for 172. I suppose riser makes sense but I haven't heard the word used in this context and my dictionary doesn't list that meaning, even as an informal term

I wanted upper too but the two amswers on each side that make up r and the s I can't get other answers for them. Thank you all for your help so far.

157d Screeching the letters are s???e?i?g. I have Shrieking.
158D. Vetted the letters are A???s?s?d. I have assessed.
I couldn't find anything eles for them as the rest of the answers I am happy with.

Without a pen or the paper it's hard to visualise but I think changing ASSessed to APPraised and shRieking to sqUealing might allow UpPer

157. is S???e?i?g and 158 is a???s?s?d. is what I have but if I put squealing and appraised in it makes 184a a?a?s The clue is disengages gradually. I had eases but with the two other answers it makes it a?a?s and I can't get an answer to fit in.

Sorry about confusing you ellie may but I am confused too. I did make a mistake in my answer to 156 down I put an extra s in assessed. If I can just get an answer to 184 a now. It is Diosengages gradually. If I put in squealing and appraised which I think are right I have a?a?s for it.
