Free Wifi Abroad Using Apps
9 Answers
Has anyone used one of the apps which advertise making free calls from abroad via Wifi (which is free?) I have just been told about this one from Ryanair called Ryanair.talk and wondered if it would work using my HTC Cha Cha model mobile phone. If it is recommended, could one of you techies please talk me through the steps of installing it, as I'm not good on instructions! LOL.
I am going to Portugal on Saturday and need to be able to talk to and check up on my elderly Mum every day. Many thanks ...........

As for free WiFi, you'll just have to see what is on offer when you get there. Your hotel may charge for WiFi. Some bars or whatever may offer WiFi access free on registration of various details.

The RyanAir app does not advertise making free calls. You have to buy a card which has a code to give you minutes of talk to a landline.
The blurb on that site doesn't tell you how much it costs to make a call, which is frustrating. You can do the same thing with Skype - a reputable company with very clear costs.

What you want is http:// www.vib er.com if you both download it and you are using wifi then its free, I have used it in Turkey to phone my son here in England and spoke for ages with no bill at the end, its great.
Thanks for your suggestions, but what I didn't make clear is we are visiting friends in their holiday home which unfortunately doesn't have Wifi (hardly any free places in their village either) Both Whatapp and the other need a broadband connection. I have resigned myself to ring Orange tomorrow and ask about purchasing a special international bundle or something - I'm not on PAYG but also not classed as being on proper contract either - I'm on SIM only contract paying only £7 per month.
