5-minute mile pace is quite fast: without knowing your background in running it's impossible to give proper advice. For example if you've already been runnng for a while and are quite fit it's most unlikely you could ever make that improvement - which would be pretty spectacular for a regular runner. On the other hand if you've only just started, are quite young and find you are comfortably running at 7-minute pace then you may have that ability which the right training could bring out.

I'd recommnend ubasses's advice, given your post about the Great South Run. You don't say how much training you do but speedwork (repetitions, fartlek) will help you increase your speed.
However it;s worth bearing in mind:
1 - As you run more you'll get faster naturally anyway, though almost certainly not up to 5-minute pace.
2 - Be realistic about what you can achieve. Don;t set "5-minute miling" as your objective, but look to set PBs at different distances along the way.
Joining a club if you don't already belong to one would be a good step.
